Tata Motors has announced that the Nano will be officially discontinued soon. The popular budget hatchback will meet its end of production and sales from April 2020. As per reports, the company isn't ready to invest any more in the once-dream project of Ratan Tata - the most affordable car in the world to fulfil everyone's four-wheeler dream.

Apparently, Tata Motors has no plans to upgrade the Nano's engine to meet the new BS-VI emission norms which are effective from April 2020. The news was shared by Mayank Pareek, President (Passenger Vehicle Business Unit) of Tata Motors.

"Nano is produced at our Sanad plant (Gujarat). In January new safety norms came. In April some more new norms will come and in October new safety norms will again come and BS-VI is going to happen from April 1 of 2020. So, all products may not meet BS-VI norms and we may not invest in upgrading all the products. Nano is one of them," stated Mayank.

There were earlier reports that the Tata Nano was (or will be) discontinued, on account of poor sales. However, the car was still available to interested buyers, on an order-to-order basis. Initially, the company tried their best to keep the car in production for a long period of time since they had an emotional connection with the project.

However, more than a decade after the Tata Nano's glorious unveiling back in January 2008, its production is finally meeting a dead-end.

Tata Motors shared that it is quite a challenge for automotive companies to make their existing products BS-VI-compliant. "Basically today we have five or six products. They will be refurbished and modified. For the Industry, this is the biggest challenge. BS-IV stock should become zero by April 1, 2020," added Mayank Pareek.

Even though one of the brand's important models is going to be discontinued, several other desirable products were introduced lately; especially the new Tata Harrier. The flasghip five-seater SUV from Tata Motors has set a new benchmark for the Indian car company through its competitive pricing and equipment levels — read the review of the Tata Harrier to know more.

Thoughts On Tata Nano Being Discontinued

"The car which cost just a lakh rupees" is finally saying goodbye. Although the stiff competition offered by various brands such as Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai is one major reason for the Nano's demise, many have trouble accepting it. In its current format, the Tata Nano really shows its age and we can only hope that it will get a worthy successor, sometime in the future.
